Modern and newly opened full service animal hospital for cats and dogs located in Cartwright Ranch / Hidden Springs, Boise. We offer routine medical, surgical and dental care for our patients. Job responsibilities:
- Greet and room clients
- Answer and make phone calls
- Schedule appointments
- Handle payments
- Relay questions to the appropriate team members
- Handle incoming and outgoing emails
- Electronically update and file patient charts
- Create and maintain social media content
- Light cleaning

Education: High school/GED
Experience:
- 1 or more years of customer service experience required;
- previous medical office experience preferred (we will train the aspects of veterinary
medicine to the right individual); - experience with creating and maintaining social media communications preferred.

Veterinary Assistant I
Required for this position:
- The ability to follow directions with and without supervision
- The ability to lift objects or pets of at least 40lbs
- The ability to recognize behavior clues in animals
- The ability to learn and understand medical terminology and minor procedures
- The ability to admit or ask questions when a task is unclear
- The ability to work with computers and other office equipment
- The ability to spell and perform basic mathematics
- The ability to provide exceptional customer service.
And in addition be proficient in the following skills:
- The ability to control large, anxious, or fractious pets in a safe and as “fear free” a manner as possible
- The ability to adapt to the different needs and styles of technicians and doctors
Persons to report to: Technician, Head Technician, Practice Manager, and Doctors.
Task Descriptions: As a Veterinary Assistant I your job entails several important aspects of our hospital; animal care and treatment, customer service, and hospital cleanliness.
Animal Care and Treatment Responsibilities:
- Restraint appropriate to the patient and procedure
- Obtaining fecal and urine(free catch) samples
- Performing or assisting with toe nail trims, ear cleanings and anal gland expressions
- Cleaning of surgical equipment/wrapping and proper sterilization of surgical packs, maintenance of the autoclave
- Maintaining supply order board and maintaining cleaning supply inventory
- Knowledge of contagious diseases and isolation protocol
- Maintaining safety when walking patients and opening cages
- Stocking of supplies throughout the hospital
- Always maintaining a high standard of patient care; and assisting the assistants, technicians and doctors in any way asked to do so.
And in addition be proficient in the following skills:
- Vaccine preparation and administration
- TPRs
- Assisting in x-ray set up and capture
- Subcutaneous and intramuscular injections
- Obtain and set up fecals, urinalysis and ear cytologies
- Culture, cytology and histopathology preparation
- In- house lab tests (including heartworm tests, PCV and TPs, parvo tests), in-house lab machine tests
- Outside lab preparation, culture preparation
- Minor mathematics (including changing pounds (lbs) to kilograms (kg))
- Troubleshooting IV pumps; flush, remove and disconnect IV catheters
- Maintaining supply order board
- Minor knowledge of drugs and their usages
Customer Service Responsibilities:
- Appropriate record keeping and knowledge of computer system
- Assisting clients with multiple pets or large purchases
- Bringing up patients following discharge instruction
And in addition be proficient in the following skills
- Completing and accurately documenting assigned client communication
- Basic client education (puppy/kitten, nail trim, heartworm talks)
- Invoicing and checking out clients
- Prepping client and exam rooms for doctor or technician
- Obtaining and documenting appropriate patient history
- Filling prescriptions
- Preparing rabies, health and other certificates for clients
- Providing information for over-the-counter and nutritional products; preparing
- Maintaining compassion, sympathy and professionalism during even the most high-stress situations.
Hospital Cleanliness Responsibilities:
- Vacuuming, mopping, changing garbage, dusting
- Following daily, weekly and monthly task lists
- Cleaning and maintaining all sinks, kennel cleaning; proper dilutions for cleaning solutions; replenishing supplies (including paper towels, garbage bags, air fresheners)
- Cleaning kitchen/break area
- Hospital and surgical laundry
- Knowledge of patient isolation protocols
- Overall maintenance (both inside and outside the hospital) of the sights, smells and sounds of the hospital
And in addition proficient in the flowing responsibilities:
- Stocking exam rooms and ensuring cleanliness between exams
- Changing cold sterile trays, filtering cytology stains and maintaining lab equipment
**This is by no means a complete list. Some tasks may be assigned to a specific staff member to complete. Some tasks may be added or removed from this list as deemed necessary for the safety and well being of our patients.**
Emergency Situations: During an emergency situation, the veterinary assistant’s job is to help the reception staff in controlling appointments (including rescheduling appointments if necessary), as well as to be the “Fetch” person (including grabbing needed supplies as directed as quickly as possible). It is also essential to maintain a tidy work area in order to be prepared for emergencies. This requires a strong knowledge of where important supplies are located throughout the hospital, as well as the ability to respond calmly and quickly, especially with clients.
Opportunities for Growth: There are several areas of potential growth as a veterinary assistant in our hospital. By demonstrating the desire to perform and/or learn additional tasks, this position can be upgraded to Veterinary Assistant II should the position become available. These are just a few tasks that we feel would demonstrate the desire of a veterinary assistant to learning and growing within our hospital:
- Setting and maintaining IV catheters
- The ability to troubleshoot anesthetic changes in surgical patients
- The ability to provide compassion and sympathy during euthanasias
- The ability to provide and explain procedure estimates
- The ability to handle telephone calls completely and quickly
- The ability to perform progressively difficult mathematics
- The ability to set up and obtain more difficult radiographs.
